Legendary minimal tech’ Cologne-based label Kompakt returns to Australia for another pulsating tour next month.
Kompakt is back, and it is third time lucky for Australian audiences as the legendary Germany label returns for the third time courtesy of Brisbane based tour operator & promoter, TDMUZIC. The German imprint has been described as the label that’s contributed more to Germany’s supremacy of electronic music that any other. Accolades don’t come much higher.
Launched in 1998 by Jurgen Paape, Wolfgang Voig and Michael Mayer, Kompakt has developed into a highly reputable and established outlet for melancholy, mood and melody.
Proving that Aussie clubbers can’t get enough of the Kompakt sound, the label’s back, and this time it’s bringing friends Kaito and Tobias Becker.
Hiroshi Watanabe (Kaito) has been caught up in house and techno since his graduation from Boston’s Berklee College of Music. After he moved to the Big Apple, DJ gigs arrived thick and fast, performing at esteemed club Twilo.
After a few early successful releases, he released the EP Sketch from a Moment under the Quadra moniker, as well as Beatmania-Beat Indication (the latter released under his real-name). Watanabe’s also made his mark on the Konami video game, Beat Mania. In 1999 he settled in Japan and started producing for Japanese artists, making a huge impact with killer remixes and productions. Yet in 2001 his stature rose further. His alter-ego, Kaito, was born after he released Beautiful Day, Everlasting Awakening and the albums Special Life and Special Love Heart on Kompakt Records.
Around the same time he started a new venture, a deep, slow house project named Tread. After continued success using the 32 Project, he continues to give greatly commended live performances the world over.
Germany’s Tobias Becker arrived at electronic music in similar fashion. After an education learning classical music, his primary contact with electronic music was via the radio. He ditched his baritone for a set of Technics and went about getting gigs and making sounds.
In 2003 Becker formed his own Platzhirsch Schallplatten label, whose records are distributed through Kompakt. The partnership is one of mutual admiration as Becker focuses on regular releases and Kompakt parties. Becker’s played alongside the likes of Laurent Garnier and Miss Kitten.
So get on-board Kompakt lovers for another dose of musical mayhem.
