Street Press Australia presents Dexter XX Tour kicking off in May 2010
Over the course of the last two decades, DJ Dexter has achieved, created and pushed boundaries unlike any other Australian artist.
From his history-making achievements in the World DMC DJ Championships, to work past and present with The Avalanches, Grrilla Step & Curse The Machines, and remixing projects completed
for The Chemical Brothers, Beastie Boys and Dr Octagon, Dexter’s career will be commemorated with a massive world tour celebrating his first 20 years in the music industry.
The show will trace all facets of his career kicking off in his home town of Melbourne in May 2010, where Dexter will take you back to where it all began with his original old belt-drive turntables, bangin’ red boombox and his brother, grandmaster Kuya’s records. Together, the pair cut their performing teeth running a mobile DJ service for 10 years and playing friends birthdays and school discos.
These humble beginnings allowed him to eventually create his winning DMC sets from ’97,’98, ’99 and of course 2000, when he came within an inch of pinching the world title from the legendary Craze. Dexter will use his otwn iconic silver plated Technics mixer to perform his classic DMC routines.
Renowned classics sets will also be reconstructed, including those special ones from Meredith Music Festival where the foundations of the Grrilla Step project began, Area 2 (where he played alongside Moby, David Bowie & Busta Rhymes), Spain‘s Benicassim
Festival, the UK’s Homelands and those magical sold out shows at the Prince Bandroom that still get talked about today.
A troupe of guests from projects past and present will also be hitting the stage to perform including the notorious Bboy Lama Roc, Royal Fam krumpers and world-class Torres Strait traditional dancer Albert David.
Very special guests Kuya (2 Minute Needles, Shook Daily Crew) and Dizz1 (Shook Daily Crew, Curse The Machines) will also be joining the party, while the Grrilla Step crew will explode on stage with their Pacific Island spirit armed with log drums, MPCs, raw indigenous dance and world-class krump straight outta’ Dandenong!
The show will all be topped off with live video projections and VJ routines which will give you a backstage pass into Dexter’s history with a selection of footage that defines his meaning of hip hop.
Even if you’ve been a casual observer of Dexter’s career throughout the years, his ability to transcend musical boundaries and bring the party in one exhilarating swoop has always shone through. From re-living defining moments of the past, celebrating the present and embracing new musical ideologies of the future, the DEXTER XX Tour will be a once in a lifetime opportunity to experience it all.
