It’s the kind of tour that will make any self-respecting techno fan cream their pants. Irish techno titan Phil Kieran has been a respected mainstay of the scene for almost a decade. His remix of Agoria’s – ‘La 11ème Marche’ remains one of the most beautiful electronic works ever committed to wax and the Irishman doesn’t disappoint in the performance stakes either, ripping up dancefloors from Melbourne to Munich.
Now, after years of honing his craft in the studio, the producer’s debut longplayer ‘Shh’ has finally hit on Sven Väth’s Cocoon imprint and the response has been unequivocal – the Belfast-based Kieran has scored an undeniable musical bullseye.
On the back of the critically acclaimed ‘Shh’, the techno ace is set to return to Australia next April with an innovative live show that’ll blow local beat fiends out of the water.
The album seems to not only reference every sound Kieran has ever loved in music, but is formulated in a completely fresh and futuristic way. Listen carefully and you can detect elements of dub reggae, old hardcore like LFO, hip-hop, Autechre/Black Dog-style early ‘90s electronica (and other Warp staples), as well as the futuristic techno that Kieran excels in.
Listen to ‘Shh’ and it’s quickly apparent that Kieran has synthesized his myriad of influences into one radically beautiful whole: Blissed-out vocal samples, space age electro, cavernous bleeps, fizzy technoid 4/4 beats, glitches, crackles, early R&S sounds, warm keys, acerbic bassline undertows, dense echoes, Orbital cinematics and randy robotics all feature. But really this is an album far greater than the sum of its parts and has a cerebral, sonic depth that ensures it sounds equally captivating at home, in the car or blaring out of a club system.
It’s lucky then for Antipodean electronic music fans, that Kieran has been sharpening his synthesizers for an eagerly anticipated series of Oz shows. With the gestation period over, ‘Shh’ is finally ready to make a sound in Aussie clubs and you better believe it’s been worth the wait.
