Solar Music Festival beacon burns bright. World-class dance phenomenon Dirty South aka Dragan Roganovic is added to the stellar line up and is confirmed to headline the dance stage at Solar 2010.
A dance prodigy from humble beginnings, Melburnian Dirty South is now ranked amongst THE BEST with accolades spanning locally and abroad. DJ / Producer Dirty South’s pivotal moments include clinching the #1 position in the ARIAs (2006) with his remix of Evermore’s “It’s Too Late” which quickly placed on British tastemaker Pete Tong’s Essential New Tunes (BBC Radio 1). Australia’s Inthemix.com.au honoured the talented Serbian-born Australian with awards for Best Producer in 2007 & 2008 and best DJ in 2008.
Dirty South currently ranks #59 in the DJ Mag Top 100 DJ (international) poll. He boasts production successes in the form of his own works (”It’s Too Late”, “Let It Go”, “The End” and “Alamo” ) and collaborations with the best producers in the world (”Open Your Heart” with Axwell and top Beatport seller “How Soon Is Now” with David Guetta and Sebastian Ingrosso). Dirty South has also remixed the most recognisable names in the music industry including U2, Snoop Dogg, Tracey Thorn, Depeche Mode, David Guetta, Josh Wink and most notably, Kaskade with his grammy nominated remix of “Sorry” in 2008.
DJ, producer and remixer, Dirty South consistently proves that he is the man with the midas touch. Make no exception on January 3rd, as the sun sets on Mornington Racecourse, Dirty South will spin gold to create a magic moment in festival history.
SOLAR MUSIC FESTIVAL BIOG:
Nestled in one of the world’s top locales, Mornington Peninsula’s beloved summer music festival Solar is upon us. On Sunday 3 January next year music lovers will flock to Mornington Racecourse for the second installment of the popular festival.
Solar triumphed last year attracting 16,000 party goers from all corners of Victoria and establishing itself as Mornington Peninsula’s premier music festival. 2010’s event will see the bar raised even higher, as the event unleashes a world-class musical extravaganza for those in attendance.
Sporting a stellar line-up of blue chip Australian bands and DJs, the festival also showcases the international talents of French touch masters Cassius and white-hot Canadian ghettotech outfit Thunderheist, who are hitting the country for their debut Oz tour. Regardless of your musical creed, there will be something to satisfy you at Solar with sounds spanning punk, rock, indie, hip hop and electronica.
SOLAR MUSIC FESTIVAL 2010 line-up:
Bliss n Eso, Birds of Tokyo, The Grates, Muscles, Dirty South, Cut Copy DJs, Cassius, Children Collide, 28 Days, Drapht, Grafton Primary, Bang Gang, Pez, 360 & Seth Sentry, Thunderheist, Eddy Current Suppression Ring, Ajax, Red Riders, Ash Grunwald, True Live, Grant Smillie (TV Rock), Andy Murphy, Acid Jacks, Chardy, Young Heretics, Red Ink, John Course, Eric Powell, Mike Hunt and Sean Rault
SOLAR MUSIC FESTIVAL ARTIST PROFILES:
Bliss N Eso: Playing two sellout shows at Festival Hall and bringing the house down during their acclaimed performance at Sound Relief, 2009 unquestionably belongs to the Sydney-based hip hop titans. Solar will be their first Victorian gig since June.
Birds Of Tokyo: Rolling Stone labeled them one of the “must-see groups on the national circuit” and their sophomore album ‘Universes’ went Gold, with three of the LP’s singles also landing in Triple J’s Hottest 100. Proudly independent, Birds of Toyko do it their own way.
The Grates: Long time festival favourites, the Brisbane band have a deft skill for setting the vibe just right. Now based in Brooklyn, New York, Solar is their first Victorian gig in six months. Guaranteed to be a special one.
Muscles: The Shepparton-born artist made an indelible impact on the Australian music scene in 2007 with the released of his debut album ‘Guns Babes Lemonade’ on Modular. He’s gone on to consolidate his popularity through a series of blazing live shows and now he’s heading to Solar for one of his first performances in almost a year!
Cut Copy: The band established themselves as masters in their field via their two critically acclaimed albums ‘Bright Like Neon Love’ and last year’s stellar sophomore LP ‘In Ghost Colours’. Cut Copy is no less impressive in the live domain, having toured with everyone from Franz Ferdinand to Daft Punk and they toured intensively throughout North America on the back of ‘In Ghost Colours’. You know Cut Copy’s DJing reps Dan Whitford and Tim Hoey will be chomping-at-the-bit to kill it on home soil.
Cassius: Energetic, emotional and dancefloor-killing. French touch masters Phillipe Zdar and Boom Bas will be knocking out one of their imitable ‘Dex n FX shows’ at Solar Music Festival, across 2 mixers, 4 turntables and EFX machines. Consider their current single ‘Youth, Speed, Trouble, Cigarettes’ which has just been added to Triple J as your tasty warm-up.
Children Collide: The Melbourne-based band has taken all before them in the past 12 months, with debut longplayer ‘The Long Now’ scoring a Triple J Feature Album accolade upon release last October. The work would go on to rank in both The Age (no.7) and Rolling Stone’s (no.17) top albums of ’08 and fuel a heavy demand for their intense live performances that saw them line-up on the main stage on the Aussie festival circuit before hitting the road for a 17 date North American tour.
28 Days: Frankston’s local heroes, the band mine the fiercest elements of hardcore, hip hop and pop punk and have delivered a string of memorable music moments throughout their 11 year career. Their ‘Upstyledown’ album placed #1 in the ARIA charts in 2000 and singles ‘Here We Go’, ‘Rip It Up’ and ‘What’s The Deal’ are just the tip of a very impressive ice berg.
Drapht: Part of Australia’s hip hop elite, you’d have to be living under a rock if you haven’t nodded your head to the Perth emcee’s killer joint ‘Jimmy Recard’, which came in at no.10 in Triple J’s Hottest 100. Catch the spitter in one of his few festival appearances this summer.
Grafton Primary: Mining influences as diverse as Kraftwerk, The Beatles and Prince, the Sydney outfit delight in smashing the divide between rock and dance. Last year’s debut album ‘Eon’ established them as heavy hitters on the Australian music scene and they’re rapidly gain profile on the international circuit too. The band is currently on tour in South America where they’re playing support for Röyksopp and The Knife. You better believe they’ll be in fine form by the time Solar hits in January.
Bang Gang: Notorious for arousing intense dancefloor stimulation, the dynamic DJ troupe knows how to mash you up, good ‘n’ proper. Their Bang Gang 12 Inches imprint is home to some of the most brain snapping d-floor gold, showcasing the likes of KIM, Bag Raiders and Lost Valentinos, to name just a few. Behind the dex, they make mincemeat of even the most straight-laced clubbers. Oh yes Solar, you’re in for a treat.
Pez, 360 & Seth Sentry: Responsible for last year’s mammoth ‘Festival Song’ that landed at no.7 Triple J’s Hottest 100, Pez and 360 are charting a devastating rise up Australia’s hip hop ranks. For their Solar performance, the pair will be joined by emerging rap star Seth Sentry who achieved cult status on Triple J courtesy of the sweet head nodding joint ‘The Waitress Song’.
Thunderheist: Branding the unforgettable war-cry of ‘Jerk It’ courtesy of last year’s breakthrough EP of the same name, the Canadian duo rip you onto the dancefloor and shag you senseless with their arse-shaking assault of electro, booty and ghettotech. Solar, better wear protection!
Eddy Current Suppression Ring: Frankston’s favourite sons, the band won an Australian Music Prize for 2008’s acclaimed album ‘Primary Colours’. The four-piece can’t wait to come back and play in their own backyard.
Ajax: The Sydney-born party starter’s achievements speak for themselves. Twice crowned ITM50’s no.1 DJ in Australia (2006 & 2007), Ajax has received props from Busy P, Digitalism and Justice, while remixing everyone from Princess Superstar, to the Midnight Juggernauts. His DJing sets span electro, fidget, rave, Baltimore and hip house as the spinner incites rampant pandemonium across festivals and clubs alike.
Red Riders: The Sydney outfit took a further step in cementing themselves as part of Australia’s rock elite when their stunning new album ‘Drown In Colour’ dropped in July. In the live domain, the outfit excels supporting Franz Ferdinand and causing a buzz at SXSW courtesy of one of their trademark stirring performances.
Ash Grunwald: The bluesman has cemented his status as one of our most talented and exciting performers, a reputation he’s garnered courtesy of the release of four critically acclaimed albums and countless shows on the road. His latest ‘LP Fish Out Of Water’ saw Grunwald collaborate with respected TZU member Count Balance, with the partnership birthing a rich soul-infused hip hop vibe on the album and kudos from music fans across the country.
True Live: The bastard children of orchestra and rap, True Live made a devastating impression on the Australian music landscape in 2006 with the landmark debut album ‘The Shape Of It’. Since then the dynamic outfit has cemented their place as one of the most talented and groundbreaking musicians in the country, with latest LP ‘Found Lost receiving’ receiving critical acclaim. But it’s in the live domain that band truly comes into their own. Solar, you’re in for something special.
Grant Smillie: He is not only one of Australia’s hardest working and in demand DJs, he is also an acclaimed producer, radio host and record label owner. As one half of TV rock alongside Ivan Gough, Smillie has broken all dance records in Australia, with their ‘Flaunt It’ classic, winning ARIA awards and spending the longest time inside the top 10 of ARIA club charts in history. Regularly touring overseas and all across the country, in every sense of the definition, Smillie’s career continues to go from strength to strength.
Andy Murphy: Australia’s newly crowned no.2 DJ, Murphy continues to excel. Dishing up his trademark style of house and electro, the DJ is a constant on the country’s biggest festival line-ups and has proven his exceptional skills by mixing a disco on Onelove’s recent ‘Smash Your Stereo’ compilation release. In the studio, Murphy is no less devastating, forming part of the trio Citylife whose recent ‘San Francisco’ hit is already on its way to enjoying anthem status.
Acid Jacks: Dishing out their patented brand of synthesized acid mutant funk, Acid Jacks’ affect on the dancefloor is always devastating. The duo’s label Idiot House has seen their productions championed by a veritable who’s who of dance music power players, including Justice, 2Many DJs, Tronik Youth, Riva Starr, Junior Sanchez and Erol Alkan. File under: awesome.
Chardy: A resident at Onelove (Melbourne and Sydney) and recently voted no.14 DJ in Australia courtesy of the ITM50 poll, Chardy’s fanbase continues to balloon. It’s no surprise considering his deft skill at playing and producing some of the tastiest cuts of house music, regularly finding his tracks in the ARIA club charts and spinning alongside the likes of Axwell, Fedde Le Grand and Sebastian Leger.
Young Heretics: The brainchild of former Getaway Plan vocalist Matthew White, Young Heretics have been blazing an impressive streak of recent form. Solar is the place to see the Mornington Peninsula-born White rip out his first show in the area. Unmissable.
Red Ink: The rising band is yet another act repping Solar HQ in Mornington. They poses a unique gift for crafting exquisite three minute pop songs, without you thinking you’re listening to a pop song, such is the depth and complexity of their musical approach. With everyone from Phrase to Goyte singing their praises, you know the four-piece has got the goods to rep the Peninsula on the world stage.
John Course: No one comes close to Coursey. The Melbourne DJ/producer has remained at the top of the DJing game for 20 years, as a former Victorian DMC winner, label owner of Vicious and radio presenter on Nova with his Overdrive show alongside Grant Smillie. Undoubtedly Australia’s busiest DJ, his achievements speak for themselves.
Eric Powell: A tried and true dance music pioneer, Powell has been entertaining electronic music lovers since the beginning playing Manchester’s legendary Hacienda nightclub. His Bush imprint has proven itself as one of the scene’s most influential labels, helping launch the careers of Dave Clarke, Felix Da Housecat, Thomas Schumacher and more. A proud resident of Rosebud, Powell currently teaches music at Mt Eliza Secondary College and is counting down the days to Solar – it’s not often the dance veteran gets to play in his own backyard!
Mike Hunt: You never know what you’re going to get when Mike Hunt steps up to the dex. The alter ego of Melbourne techno artist Matt Radovich, Hunt’s flashed his DJing wares supporting Disco D (RIP), DJ Godfather, Common and DJ Shadow, mixing up funky, booty-shaking hip hop that always gets the dancefloor salivating.
Sean Rault: A Frankston boy done good, Rault cut his DJing teeth playing the iconic 21st Century nightclub. Today, he stands as one of M-Town’s busiest spinners and moves dancefloors with a flair only rivaled by the scene’s bigger international DJ fraternity.
