Ben Watt (Buzzin Fly/Everything But The Girl - UK) Australia Day ‘Weekend’

A central figure in popular culture and London’s influential club scene, Ben Watt has progressed from garish ‘80s synthesizers to become a cult figure within the electronic sphere.

Now that’s watt I call music.  Musician, DJ and producer – Ben Watt is not your typical electronic music maestro. Known as one half of mega successful ‘80s partnership Everything But The Girl, Watt’s musical pathway is as captivating as it is successful.

He began recording back in the early ‘80s with a collection of folk-jazz inspired solo recordings. In 1982 in joined forces with vocalist Tracey Thorn to form Everything But The Girl, a partnership than has spaned 18 years and includes nine studio albums and the smash international hit Missing. (Watt lives with his spouse and creative partner Tracey Thorn).

But as an artist turned DJ, Watt’s made the transition far more easily and progressively than others to become one of the biggest names in electronic music.

In ’98 Watt and then musical partner Jay Hannan established the London deep house Sunday clubbing institution (and CD compilation series) Lazy Dog. The club and compilation attracted a cult following, which led Watt to delve deeper into the deep house electronic music orb.

His evolution continued in 2003 when Watt launched his own independent record label, Buzzin’ Fly. Now a leading edged and highly respected label, Watt has churned out dominant deep house and minimal techno compilations while fostering the careers of young up and comers like Justin Martin.

Buzzin’ Fly’s also home to Watt’s own musical outputs, including Lone Cat and Pop A Cap In Yo’ Ass. And to add to the label’s success, in 2007 he also launched a sub-label of Buzzin’ Fly called Strange Feeling Records.

Watt’s an invigorator and inventor. His inspirational deep house sound has one many plaudits. He’s remained a pivotal figure on the club scene and regularly appears and performs all over the globe. With a weekly radio show on the Kiss Network, his Buzzin’ Fly sound is spreading.
