Every so often an industrious producer makes the shift from respected underground player to big-time entertainer. This is actually what’s happening now as Riva Starr’s star continues to shine. The reality is, of course, that Starr has been around for yonks. Although his rise has been more of a gradual ascent, Riva Starr is fast becoming one of the most talked about house artists.

Thanks to a stack of recent successes including ‘Scratch’n'Itch (on Fatboy Slim’s Southern Fried label) and ‘La Conga’ EP ’(on Claude Vonstroke‘s Dirtybird label), Starr’s reputation only adds notion that his future in electronic music is, indeed, golden. With ‘La Conga’ EP reaching the top ten in the Beatport ‘Tech House’ chart and a highly commendable top 15 placing in the global chart says as much.

The reason for his success? Of course it’s a combination of things, notwithstanding a strong work ethic and a clear talent for using Latin rhythms and Brazilian beats. Starr has a canny knack of using driving tribal percussion that’s intermingled with vocals and woodwind loops. His music is party music – fluid and largely unpredictable. In fact, think of the biggest, brightest carnival and the abundance of colour and atmosphere it provides. Think carnival and you’re coming close to the sonic outputs that Starr produces.

The tribal theme is evident on War Drums, a slower offering that still retains the catchy drum pattern and contrasting melody that Starr’s known to produce. Get this: a single that Starr mixed, which was offered to the influential blog, was downloaded 12,000 times. And then there’s Maria on Get Physical’s Kindisch records – a thumping club record that celebrates Star’s musical persona.

So it’s hardly surprising that gigs have followed. He’s played in China and appeared at the legendary Glastonbury Festival.

The bloggers have also latched onto Starr. One said: “It’s not like he has a big trademark bassline, or some sort of analogue synth style, instead Starr incorporates a range of different sounds. It seems like the main thing that ties each song together is each one has an awesome hook of some kind. Music is all about having a cool sounding something these days, it’s not about ripping out some big guitar solo, or having a really musically sound piece. Riva Starr is easily on top of all that.”

Starr’s a busy boy. With new releases, projects and initiatives always threatening, the Brit’s one of electronic music’s most valued entrepreneurs.
